our Story
[DRAFT, please rewrite] Every story here is rooted in lived and living experience: one person's, many people's, and the Collective's own. And ours isn't finished. It's still being written, by everyone who walks alongside us.
X's story
X had been through more systems in their life than most people know exist.
Mental health crises where they felt unheard. Housing that was never quite stable. Relationships that hurt. The justice system that failed them. Substances that helped until they didn't. And through it all, the exhaustion of moving through a world not built for someone like X — a person of colour, AuDHD, gender-diverse, asexual — navigating institutions designed around a version of "normal" they had never been nor known.
Every time X reached out for help, the process was the same. New waiting rooms. New forms. New faces with clipboards and theories. The same story, repeated time and time again, told from scratch to someone who had already decided what X needed before they'd finished speaking. This happened across services. It happened within the same services, as though X's history — their whole life — lived only in their own memory and was seemingly irrelevant to how X's needs were met.
What X needed was never complicated. To feel seen. To feel heard. To sit in a space where it wasn't a requirement to present at crisis point to access adequate supports. A space where their experiences — often hard-won, real, and paid for in ways no qualification could measure — were recognised as exactly that. Knowledge. Expertise. Something worth building upon, worth working with.
When X found a peer role, they met others carrying the same weight. The same soul-deep exhaustion. The same quiet grief of being reduced to a diagnosis, a risk level, a problem to manage — when all along they had been a person with something to offer.
That recognition changed something.
When those of us who have been marginalised find each other, something shifts. When individual embers — each one kept alive through sheer resilience — come together, are nurtured, and seen to had value, something gives. And what was once a struggle to survive alone becomes the collective flames for change through connection, community, and care.
That's the gap the Living Collective exists to fill — where individual embers become a unified flame and, collectively, we become… the Change We Want to See
X's Story isn't a fabrication. X's Story isn't pretty… but X's Story is very real because… X's Story is my own
the Canary, the Mine, and the Songs of tLC
This story is told in seven parts. Open each one in turn.
It begins ‘Now…’ Life in the cages, deep within the mine.
We’ve been told from the youngest of ages that all good stories begin with “Once upon a time…” Unfortunately, this little tale does not. It begins ‘Now…’
And right now, times are hard, as they often are, and for generations, all canaries had lived within cages in an immense mine system. The mine stretched beyond the imaginations that any canary could perceive. The mine was an amass of tunnels and endless mazes. With twists and turns throughout the oppressive darkness. With dark, damp walls seemingly constructed before any living canary could remember. Seemingly immoveable. Seemingly impregnable. Seemingly the sole consistency within the bleakness.
No one knew its true history, who had first built them, their innate purpose. All that was known, or more so implied, was that it had been shaped by countless wings. Conceived by countless decisions. Implemented by countless choices. Over countless generations. And one may surmise, stained by countless bloody feathers.
Some elements of the cages offered shelter. Some aspects offered the illusion of safety. And some parts helped canaries survive. Yet over time, and to the current state of things, much of the mine had become disconnected from current needs of those living within it. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say the mine is even oppressive.
The general conscious is that the cages are simply a part of life. Some canaries were told they are most fortunate to have their cages. While many were blamed for poor condition of the cage they inhabited. Many never thought to question their reality. After all, how does one question a world beyond their cages they have never seen?
Yet still, every canary possessed something unique. A song. Some songs celebrated their existence. Some songs were joyous. Some songs were mournful. Some songs were angry. Some songs were subdued. Some deeply sad. And some songs had been silenced for so long that the canaries barely remember the melody. Others, more daring… sang freely despite the darkness surrounding them.
But each and every song, at its core, told the story of a life lived within the mine. Every song was real. Every song mattered. Even the ones no one had yet heard.
A crack in the cage A breeze, an echo, and a question: could there be more than this?
But today, a day no different from any other day, a sole canary noticed a crack in their cage. And as small as it was, through it they felt a slight breeze. And on that breeze, the hum of an echo. An echo of a harmony unlike anything they had heard before. A whisper on the edge of hearing. A promise unspoken yarning. Of sorrow and solace.
Not an instruction. Not a command. Nor an order. A melody. Distant. Unfamiliar. Long forgotten. Yet somehow recognisable, as though it spoke to something that has always been. forever existed. Ever present. Like a stolen memory. Familiar yet unplaceable.
The canary began to wonder. Began to dream. More importantly… Began to question. Could there be more than this?
Over many days… Over many nights… Through many struggles… Through many challengers… Both external and internal… The canary tried to get out. Tried to break free. With patience, persistence, and perseverance, Something shifted. Something finally gave. The canary broke through the confines of the bars, finally venturing beyond their cage... Expecting freedom.
Beyond the cage Escaping the cage was only the beginning.
Instead, they were met with oppressive darkness. Met with the mine. Dark tunnels. Winding paths. Forgotten chambers. The deeper, darker reality that lay beyond the cage.
The canary didn’t give up, though. Didn’t give in. Didn’t retreat to their cage. They carried on.
The journey was difficult. Some tunnels held grief. Others held trauma. Others contained the weight of generations. Of poverty. Of discrimination. Of exclusion. Of violence. Of oppression.
The canary discovered systems and structures that shaped the lives of those within their cages, within the mine. Although some had been built with good intentions. Most had been built to serve only a few. The mine system wasn’t broken. It had been designed this way. The mine had existed for so long that no one remembered to ask whether they still served the canaries they were meant to support.
The canary discovered that escaping the cage was not the end of the story. It was only the beginning.
Songs from distant tunnels The canary realises they are not alone.
As they travelled deeper, they began to hear something. Faint at first. Easy to dismiss. Songs drifting from distant tunnels. Melodies unlike their own, carried by canaries navigating paths they had never walked. But deep within their core, something long forgotten resonated.
Other canaries were trying to navigate the mine. And the canary realised they were not alone. Some were making their way through steep and jagged mountains, their songs shaped by the individual weight of who they were… and what they have experienced. The many identities they carried. The many ways the world had named them, Categorised them, Separated them, Overlooked them, Or misunderstood them.
Although their journeys differed from the canary’s, Harder in ways that were difficult to explain… Their stories were impossible to ignore.
To really listen Familiar notes running through unfamiliar melodies.
At first, the songs seemed too different to share. Too distant. Too particular. But the longer the canary listened, the more they began to hear something deep within the differences. Familiar notes running through unfamiliar melodies. Longing. Loss. Love. The desire to belong. The desire to be free. The desire, quiet, persistent, and unextinguished, to be seen.
This recognition shifted something. Changed something deep within the canary. Down deep within their core. A sense of connection. Something profoundly rooted within their shared experiences. Of lived experiences. Of living experiences.
Gradually, canaries began to share their songs. Not to overpower one another. Not to decide whose song mattered most. Not to convince others that their melody was the only one worth hearing. But to listen. To really listen. With a curiosity. With authenticity. To sit with another canary’s song long enough to feel what it carried. The weight of a canary’s lived and living experiences. To understand not just the notes, but the life behind them.
And as more voices joined, something unexpected began to happen.
A collective song Together, the songs begin to change the mine.
The songs started to harmonise. Distinct voices remained distinct. No canary was asked to change their melody, simplify it, or make it easier for others to hear. Yet together, those voices created something larger than any individual song. Something that had never existed before because it could only exist together. A collective song. A living song.
It moved through the tunnels differently than any single voice ever could. It reached chambers where canaries had given up calling out. It travelled across mountains that had seemed impossible to cross alone. It connected parts of the mine that had long been kept separate.
And where it travelled, something shifted. Walls that had seemed permanent began to crack. Old assumptions began to loosen. Silence began to give way to understanding. Systems that had relied upon separation and disconnection began to weaken.
The mine did not change because a single canary found the answer. It changed because many canaries found one another.
Some canaries reached the open sky. Others remained within the tunnels, not because they were lost, but because that was where they were needed. Some returned carrying lanterns, walking back into the darkness so others would not have to navigate the dark alone. Some carried maps drawn from hard experience, marking the passages that had nearly broken them so others might find another way. All of them carried songs.
And wherever they travelled, they invited others to sing. Not because every canary should sing the same melody. But because every voice, every distinct, unique, hard-won voice, added something essential to the whole.
the Living Collective is born When canaries sing together…
And so, the Living Collective was born. Not as a flock following a leader. Not as a chorus singing in unison. But as a gathering of canaries willing to listen, to learn, and to harmonise. A place where individual songs become collective strength. Where lived and living experience becomes shared understanding. Where connection becomes the force that creates change.
Because when canaries sing alone, they survive.
When canaries sing together, the mine itself begins to transform.
